Making Your Portland PCS Easier with Large Storage Totes

For military families, a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) can be overwhelming. Between sorting out new housing, school transitions, vehicle shipping, and all the logistics in between, even deciding how to pack can feel like a major hurdle. One simple, budget-friendly strategy that has been gaining traction is using oversized storage totes for luggage.

Why Totes Work for PCS Moves

During my own PCS move from Virginia Beach to Honolulu, I came across the idea of using 27, 55, or even 60-gallon totes instead of relying solely on traditional suitcases. Many military families swear by this method, and for good reason: the totes are durable, stack easily, and make organizing essentials much simpler.

Airline Baggage Rules That Work in Your Favor

Active-duty service members and their dependents benefit from extra baggage allowances when traveling under orders. This is where large totes can really shine, since the weight and size limits line up with what most airlines will accept. Here’s a quick breakdown of the main carriers’ military policies:
• American Airlines: Up to 5 bags free when on orders, each up to 100 lbs. For personal travel, 3 free bags.
• Delta Air Lines: 5 free bags on orders (100 lbs each, 4 in economy), 2 free on personal trips (50 lbs each).
• United Airlines: Up to 5 free bags at 100 lbs each on orders; 3 free bags (70 lbs each) for personal travel.
• Southwest Airlines: No cap on number of bags for those on orders, as long as each stays under 100 lbs and 80 inches.
• Alaska Airlines: 5 free bags per traveler on orders, up to 70 lbs each, with oversize fees waived.

These policies mean that a properly packed tote can serve as a “free checked bag” in many situations.
Packing Smart

If you go this route, secure your totes with heavy-duty zip ties for peace of mind. Just wait until after check-in to attach them, since TSA may need to inspect the contents. A little planning here goes a long way toward a smoother travel day.
